Subway Rook – A Winning Strategy Against Ranging Rook

Subway Rook is a shogi strategy designed to counter Ranging Rook openings. The tactic involves retreating the rook to the first rank and then shifting it to the 9th file to launch an edge attack.

Setting Up the Subway Rook Attack

Ranging Rook players often rely on defensive formations like Mino, High Mino, Anaguma, or Right Yagura castles. What these castles have in common is a vulnerability at the edges. The goal of the Subway Rook strategy is to exploit this weakness and secure a decisive victory by breaking through on the flank.

The first step is to create a “subway tunnel” for your rook to reach the 9th file. This involves advancing your other pieces to clear the path. There are various ways to set up this formation, and sometimes adjusting the move order can make the process smoother.

When setting up the attack, flexibility is key—you’ll often need to adapt as the game progresses. The primary attacking pieces for the edge assault are the knight, silver, bishop, and of course, the rook. These pieces work together to execute a powerful strike on the opponent’s defensive setup.

How to Attack with the Subway Rook

Once your pieces are developed, the next step is to launch your attack by pushing the pawn on the 9th file. From here, you’ll attack with your rook, bishop, silver, knight, and lance. In the example, the opponent is using the Right Yagura castle, but whether they’re using Mino, Anaguma, or Right Yagura, your goal remains the same: break through their edge and promote your pieces.

Against an Anaguma, you might often find an opportunity to advance your knight during the preparation phase. In this case, you could even start by sacrificing the knight with ▲9-3 Knight promotion to get the attack going.

One important thing to keep in mind when using Subway Rook is that even if your rook promotes, it often doesn’t have many escape routes, making it vulnerable to capture. So, be sure to carefully manage your pieces as you press the attack. Also, having pawns in hand opens up powerful drop techniques that can greatly increase your attacking potential.
