The Migi Yagura Castle / 右矢倉囲い (aka Right Fortress) is mainly used Ranging Rook battles. It is strong against attacks from above but has a weakness against attacks from the side.
The term “Migi” (右) in “Migi Yagura” means “right” in English.
Does having a right option imply that there is also a left option? —The answer is yes! The Left Yagura is indeed the most commonly chosen solid formation in Double Static Rook games.
The Right Yagura is a Yagura formation built on the right side for Double Ranging Rook games.
How To Build A Migi Yagura formation
- Move the rook to the file you prefer, then start building your offensive strategy.
- Move the king to the castle’s key position, following a safe path along the way.
- Move the right gold and silver generals, advancing to the upper ranks while maintaining good coordination.
- Move the left gold general, supporting the king while advancing to the upper ranks.
- Move the king into the castle while continuing the battle.
Since it takes many moves, the key is to maintain good coordination among your pieces while aiming for the final position.
In some cases, you may need to fight with an incomplete formation.
For this reason, you can move the silver to 2-8 instead of 3-8, or prioritize the left gold’s defense before moving the king.
Some players develop the popular Mino castle used in Ranging Rook strategies into a Right Yagura formation.
It is weak against attacks from the lower ranks, so caution is needed, but it is very strong against attacks from above. You can also advance the edge pawn to secure an escape route for the king. Additionally, the top silver can be used to break out of the castle and engage in combat.
